Il genio elvetico la pratica Haas in poco più di due ore, producendo il tennis brillantissimo ed esteticamente sublime che lo ha reso famoso e altrettanto amato. Ma proprio in quel momento, quando per il tedesco era alle soglie del secondo tie-break, che avrebbe potuto riequilibrare i giochi, ecco lo svizzero accelerare il passo, a rimarcare una volta in più la differenza tra un eccellente giocatore e un fenomeno. Due set sotto pur avendo giocato un gran match - emblematico il sorriso amaro indirizzato al suo angolo alla fine della seconda partita, il trentunenne di Amburgo cala nella terza e inesorabilmente, all'ottavo game, arriva il break che porta Federer a servire per il match, chiuso con uno smash al salto di samprasiana memoria. La vittoria odierna è un ulteriore, importante passo dello svizzero nella sua ascesa tra le leggende del tennis. Sette finali consecutive a Wimbledon sono il record assoluto da quando il torneo si gioca con le regole attuali, e cioè con tutti i giocatori in lizza dal primo incontro (nella preistoria di questo sport, il torneo inglese adottava la formula challenge, il campione in carica sfidava il vincitore di tutti gli altri, come nell'America's Cup di vela avviene tuttora). Ma non è tutto: lo svizzero ottiene la ventesima finale di torneo Grand Slam in carriera (record assoluto) e, nel caso di successo diventa il massimo vincitore di Slam della storia, issandosi a quota 15, un successo in più di Sampras, con il quale coabita dal successo parigino ... "mi piacerebbe che Pete ci fosse, domenica", ha subito detto il fuoriclasse di Basilea, che con la storia del tennis convive sin da giovanissimo. Inoltre, ciliegina, seppure non per soliti meriti propri, Roger torna n.1 al mondo, favorito anche dall'assenza di Nadal, che l'anno scorso a Wimbledon l'aveva battuto in un match epico. Federer affronta Roddick, che nella seconda finale ha ammutolito il pubblico inglese, battendo lo scozzese Andy Murray in quattro set. Partita molto equilibrata, con un break per parte nei primi due set e due tie break, entrambi vinti dall'americano che ha messo dalla sua parte l'esperienza. Per li 27enne del Nebraska è la terza finale a Wimbledon: ha giocato e perso le altre due proprio contro l'elvetico. La partita va avanti sul filo dell'equilibro, con entrambi i giocatori raramente in difficoltà nei rispettivi turni di battuta. Il primo break regala il set d'avvio allo statuntitense, che però perde subito il servizio d'avvio del secondo set, senza riuscire a recuperarlo. Nella terza partita Roddick riesce a breakkare Murray, ma sul 5-3 e servizio subisce il ritorno dello scozzese. Si arriva al tie-break, deciso da un solo minibreak. Ancora equilibrio nel quarto, con l'americano che ha il coraggio di osare, di spingersi a rete pur sapendo di avere di fronte un avversario che passa benissimo, e di non poter opporre un gioco di volo di primissimo ordine. Ma l'arrembaggio ha l'effetto di tenere quanto basta sotto pressione lo scozzese, sostenuto da un pubblico entusiasta, quanto corretto (alla fine Roddick lo saluterà calorosamente, quasi "scusandosi" per aver eliminato il beniamino locale). Si arriva nuovamente al tie break, ma anche stavolta è l'americano a spingere, portandosi avanti e chiudendo il match con un parziale di 7 punti a 5. Per l'americano le statistiche sembrano il preludio a una sconfitta sicura. Nei confronti diretti con Federer, Roddick è sotto 2-18. A Wimbledon ci ha perso 3 volte, 2 in finale e una in semifinale. Federer ha sempre battuto lo statunitense nei match di tornei Grand Slam e in generale in partite al meglio dei 5 set. Sicuramente, Roddick edizione 2009 è apparso molto migliorato nei suoi lati deboli - il rovescio, il gioco di volo, la mobilità, tanto da permettergli di ottenere buoni risultati anche nella stagione "rossa", per lui sempre ostica. Il Federer di questi giorni, però, sembra più di un gradino sopra. C'è solo Roddick tra Federer e il 15/o slam L'elvetico batte il tedesco Haas in tre set e vola in finale a Wimbledon. Sfiderà lo statunitense, che ha piegato l'idolo locale Murray in quattro partite (22:36 03/07/2009)
